Assessment of Executive Functions and Attention: Brown Scales (Brown EF/A Scales)

Brown Scales of Executive Function and Attention (Brown EF/A Scales)

The Brown Scales allow us to analyze attentional profiles and executive functions from a holistic perspective. Through this instrument, we identify how individuals regulate their effort in daily life, integrating their own perspective with that of their family and school environment. Our goal is to observe significant differences in skills in order to provide precise, scientifically sound, and clinically valuable support.

🧠 What do the Brown Scales assess?

At Neuropsyedu, we conceive of assessment not as a collection of scores, but as a rigorous process to understand how each person solves the demands of their environment.

The Brown EF/A Scales offer a robust tool for analyzing attentional profiles. This instrument allows us to observe symptoms associated with ADHD (according to DSM-5 criteria), as well as other less obvious challenges in executive function performance that impact learning and behavior.

🌐 The importance of a multi-source and multi-dimensional evaluation

Understanding the neuropsychological profile requires going beyond the strictly clinical setting. Therefore, it is essential to integrate a multi-source and multidimensional assessment .

  • Consultant's perspective: We know firsthand how they experience mental effort, concentration, and information retention.

  • Support network (Parents and Teachers): We corroborate and enrich this information with observations at home and in the school environment.

Analyzing this situational variability provides us with a comprehensive view. This level of detail is key to identifying the compensatory strategies the client naturally uses when faced with a complex task, allowing us to structure truly useful recommendations.

🎯 A context-focused clinical approach

Unlike other instruments that focus solely on recording the frequency of a behavior, the Brown Scales focus on the intensity of specific behaviors within a particular context (e.g., the significant difference in the ability to maintain focus when assigned a required reading versus a task of personal interest).

This helps us to identify both strengths in information processing and opportunities for improvement, moving away from rigid labels and closer to the reality of the client.

The six-grouping model of Executive Functions

The instrument is based on Dr. Thomas E. Brown's clinical model, which illustrates how these skills operate in an interconnected manner. We dynamically assess the following areas:

  1. Activation: Organization, prioritization, and readiness to start work.

  2. Focus: Ability to direct, sustain, and alternate attention between tasks.

  3. Effort: Regulation of alertness, maintenance of mental effort, and processing speed.

  4. Emotion: Modulation of emotional responses and frustration management.

  5. Memory: Efficient use of working memory and access to active recall.

  6. Action: Monitoring and self-regulation of behavior and motor action.

📋 Characteristics and format of the evaluation

To ensure a high-quality corporate and scientific standard, the application process has the following characteristics:

  • 👤 Age range: Assessment available from preschool (3 years) to adulthood. Adapted forms: Preschool (3-7 years), School-age (8-12 years), Adolescents (13-18 years) and Adults (19+ years).

  • ⏱️ Application time: Agile and structured instrument, with an estimated time of 10 to 15 minutes per form.

  • 📊 Psychometric rigor: It has updated norms, both specific to gender and combined, ensuring objectivity in the analysis of the data.

  • 💻 Secure technology: Digital administration and grading through the Q-global system, guaranteeing data protection and information confidentiality.

  • 🤝 Practical guidance: The findings are translated into a clear neuropsychological report that explains how the task is solved, providing a collaborative action plan for the family and the educational institution.
