Autism Diagnostic Assessment (ADOS-2 and ADI-R)
🤓 If you wish to deepen your knowledge on the subject, I recommend reading the following article of my own authorship: Evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of autism in Panama.
🧩 Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder of neurobiological origin that usually affects the person in social, communicative and behavioral areas. There may or may not be presence of stereotyped, repetitive or inflexible behaviors.
🧠The full name of this neurodevelopmental condition is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), although some authors in the scientific field prefer to use Autism Spectrum Conditions as a synonym, because it is a term that provides greater respect for neurodiversity, asserting that within this population group there are differences that make each subject unique, including having strengths and weaknesses that must be worked on to promote the development of their adaptation in the environment in which they find themselves.
🔎 The scientific literature is convincing in stating that the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Score) and ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview - Revised Edition) instruments are considered ideal tests to confirm or rule out the diagnosis of autism, especially due to their high levels of diagnostic effectiveness. 🤚 It is necessary to clarify that apart from the aforementioned tests, it is vital to use other techniques such as clinical interview, observation, evaluating cognitive factors, functional skills and relying on the impressions of other specialists, so that precise, objective and accurate conclusions can be drawn about each case.
🧐 Below I will give you a summary of the purpose, importance and benefits of both tests mentioned:
✅ ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale): is a standardized and semi-structured evaluation that, through the use of "pressures" exerted by the evaluator, it is possible to create standardized contexts in which it is possible to observe social behaviors, communication, linguistic skills or the presence of unusual or inappropriate behaviors that may or may not be related to symptoms related to autism.
✅ ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised Edition): This consists of a 93-question interview that focuses on three domains of functioning that are diagnostically important in relation to autism: on the one hand, areas related to language/communication. Secondly, areas of reciprocal social interactions and thirdly, questions related to restricted, repetitive and stereotyped behaviors and interests.
