🧠 What is Telepsychology and how does Virtual Care work?

Virtual mental health care is commonly known as telepsychology . Based on the American Psychological Association (APA) , we define telepsychology as the delivery of psychological and neuropsychological services through the use of secure technological platforms.

This includes videoconference sessions, communication via email and secure messaging, or digital resources (such as this article). Communication can be:

  • Synchronous: In real time (live video call).

  • Asynchronous: Information shared in advance for analysis.

⚖️ Ethics and Legality in Online Consultations

At Neuropsyedu , we understand that virtual care is not exempt from the rigorous ethical standards of our profession. Your safety is our priority.

In the Panamanian context 🇵🇦, our practices are strictly governed by:

  1. Panamanian Code of Ethics (Resolution No. 001-2019 CT/PS).

  2. Technical-Administrative Regulations for Mental Health (MINSA Resolution 637, 2023).

🤔 Why choose Virtual Psychological Care?

You might be wondering: Can technology really facilitate my mental health process? The answer is a resounding yes. Telepsychology eliminates barriers and is an ideal option if you experience:

Mobility or Access Difficulties: If you live far from urban areas, have chronic illnesses that make transportation difficult, or simply want to avoid city traffic. ✅ Emotional Barriers: Ideal for people with diagnoses such as social anxiety , agoraphobia, or certain conditions that make initial in-person attendance difficult. ✅ Technology Preference: Especially effective for teenagers and young adults who feel more comfortable and open interacting through digital media.

💻 Key benefit: Facilitates psychoeducation, guidance, neuropsychological assessment and clinical intervention for both the patient and their family members, from the comfort of home.

📋 Requirements for a Successful Virtual Consultation

To guarantee the quality of care (similar to in-person care), both the professional (Mario Pimentel or Susan Navarro) and the client must ensure:

  1. Basic Technical Knowledge: Experience using videoconferencing platforms (Zoom, Meet, etc.).

  2. Private and Secure Environment: It is essential to be in a quiet place, without noise or interruptions, guaranteeing the confidentiality of the session.

  3. Stable Connectivity: Good internet connection, camera and audio working properly.

👉🏼 Note regarding children and adolescents: Currently, our Telepsychology service is open to adults and adolescents (with parental consent). For children , we suggest an initial interview with the parents to determine if the virtual modality suits the child's needs or if a hybrid approach is required.
